Alka Joshi’s fascinating novel complements our December showing of the film Shalom Bollywood. Joshi is a superb storyteller delving into issues of identity and prejudice. Six Days in Bombay is a continent-crossing mystery set in 1937 that includes the fate of Jews trying to anticipate the political changes of the times.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Edirne city was a bustling center linking Istanbul to Ottoman Europe. Edirne Jews, one of the world’s largest Sephardi communities, zigzagged between shifting political borders – without moving a mile! Using Ladino, French, English, and Turkish sources, Jacob Daniels challenges assumptions to tell a compelling new story about their resistance and survival.

Dahlia Abraham-Klein wrote Caravan of Hope based on her grandmother’s incredible story surviving a Soviet prison where she gave birth and travelled by horse to return to her Bukharian family in Afghanistan. The family’s trek continued through Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Israel and India ending in Forest Hills New York. Bukharian Jews were isolated from their northern Persia origins because of waring borders yet held on to their unique central Asian, Sephardic style culture and orthodox traditions and thrived despite centuries of oppression.
